HISTORICAL CITY COMPARISON, YORK AND CHESTER

The Brief

To carry out a strategic comparison of the cities of York and Chester, and analyse what makes York such a successful historic visitor attraction.

My Role

Chester and York have much in common: both are Roman cities, tell stories about Vikings, have significant archaeological sites and are visually similar, yet York's popularity with visitors far outstrips that of Chester. My role was to look at all areas of York's offer, including events, projects, political leadership, the city's orientation and Christmas event programme to identify the triggers for the city's success. Based on those findings I created a report and destination analysis for Chester's strategic development.
