Milligan

The Brief

I was brought in to look at the Triangle retail development in Manchester, and how it could work better for the city.

My Role

Working with the Ear to the Ground team, my role was to develop a plan for Manchester's refurbished former Cotton Exchange, the Triangle, and help its local audience fall back in love with it. We developed a 12-18 month plan to orient the building towards owner makers, using it as a unique retail/ events space with DJs, artists and fashion boutiques. Part of that strategy also involved giving a home to the Manchester Fashion Network, a monthly event to mentor new designers and sell their products.

An award-winning marketing and event campaign created an estimated £20m of added value, allowing Milligan to sell the Triangle for approximately £60m.

Following the success in Manchester, they introduced us to their recently-acquired Maremagnum complex in Barcelona. Attracting only tourists at the time, we developed a similar plan, orienting the destination around local needs, and creating an authentic sense of place. Milligan’s co-investment funded a €14m refurbishment to allow Maremagnum to become an exciting retail and lifestyle destination for the local population, championing independent Spanish fashion designers. Adding over €50m in value, Milligan sold the landmark for €122m in 2006.
